2008 Road Tours to St Charles, Missouri
The central location for the 2008 NCRS National Convention affords us
an uncommon opportunity: no single Tour has to make a long trek. With
today’s gasoline prices we can all appreciate that. The Tours converge
in Missouri resulting in more than half of the individual tours spending
two days together “On the Road Again”; including a special
night in Branson, Missouri attending the Dixie
Stampede show and dinner theater and hosting a special drive- in movie
cruise event Friday. Saturday morning we’ll tour the Patch Collection
at Dick
Clark’s “57 Heaven”. Overviews of the individual
tour plans follow.
Eastern Tour
The Eastern Tour led by Bill
Sangrey will depart Front Royal, VA Tuesday July 15th to visit the
Bob McDorman Collection in Canal Winchester, Ohio that evening. We overnight
in Canal Winchester. Wednesday the Tour visits Zakira’s
Garage a vintage race car restoration shop in Cincinnati, and overnights
in Georgetown, KY (near Lexington). Thursday morning we visit the Gayla
Driving Center a horse drawn carriage and wagon training center and
carriage restoration shop. At the Gayla Center we’ll see horse drawn
carriage driving demonstrations through an obstacle course with water
and a course defined by cones similar to an autocross course. Tour members
can also visit Keeneland Race Course to observe race horses training in
the early AM or the Kentucky Horse Park. We will overnight in Paducah,
KY on Thursday July 17th. Friday we’ll travel to Branson, Mo attending
the Dixie
Stampede dinner & show and overnight there. Saturday July 19th
after touring “57Heaven” we travel mostly secondary roads
to Rolla.
Northeast Tour
This will be lead by Ron
Smith of Danbury, Connecticut. Contact Ron at 203-748-0809, Ron plans
for the NE Tour to depart Bloomsburg, PA Tuesday July 15th. The Bloomsburg
starting point is a one day drive from Boston, Long Island Montreal, and
Western NY. The NE Tour will overnight on the 15th in Clarksburg, WV.
Wednesday July 16th the North East Tour will join the Eastern tour overnighting
in Georgetown, KY. Possible stops prior to Kentucky include the Johnstown
Flood Museum, the Flight 93 Memorial, WV Museum of American Glass, and
Carter Caves Park, KY. Members can join in Clarksburg as well, a one day
drive from Toronto. Members can arrange with Ron to join anywhere in route.
Northwest Tour
The Northwest Tour led by Mike
Doty of Yakima, Washington 509-480-0790, will depart Thursday July17th. Mike plans a bit of a quick run to the convention. The NW Tour will overnight near Ogden, Utah on Thursday and Friday night at
North Platte, Nebraska. Saturday night the NW Tour will hook up with the other tour groups in Rolla, MO. Mike plans no sight seeing in route, just to enjoy the scenery cruising through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. I-84
to I 80 to I 29 to I 70 to Rolla. 8 states in 3 days. Quote from Mike; “We’ll watch Smokey and the Bandit before we leave......”
Carolinas Tour
Led by Jimmy
Gregg of Matthews, NC 704-577-2959. The Carolinas Tour will gather
Wednesday evening July 16th at the Cherokee, NC Fairfield Inn. Expect
gambling at the Harrah Casino. Thursday AM the Tour will head for the
Cherohala Skyway (30+ miles of turns), Lost Sea (underground lake), and
Tennessee Aquarium to overnight in Murfreesboro, TN. Friday AM the Carolinas
Tour heads for the Nashville Country Music Stars Car Museum and the National
Corvette Museum with an overnight in Paducah, KY. Saturday the Carolinas
Tour follows scenic back roads to join the NCRS Road Tour “Last Night
Out” in Rolla, MO.
Texas Tour
Led by Bob
Demmel of Plano, TX, 972-377-2096. The Texas Tour departs Dallas July
17th joining the North Texas group in Greenville, TX east of Dallas and
the South Texas group in Texarkana and proceeds to Hot Springs, AR for
the night. July 18th after joining with the Oklahoma Tour in Hot Springs
we’ll drive through Ouachita Mountains over to Conway, AR for lunch and
then proceed to Branson, MO to join the tour events described above.
Northern California Tour
This Tour section, added since the last Driveline, will be led by Glorie
and Art McNay at 530-662-7951. They’ll depart Sacramento, CA Monday
July 14th. Glorie and Art plans for this trip include as much scenic byway
travel and sites as the distance and time limits will allow. They plan
for the route to embrace Bill’s Road Tour philosophy as much as possible;
“It is not about the destination. It is about what we do, who we are with
and the sites we see.” For example; traveling “The Loneliest Road in America”
– US50 they’ll visit the Monarch Pass across the Continental Divide and
Arches National Park.
Southern California Tour
Led by Jerry
Louer of Corona, CA, 951-734-9818, will begin from Ontario, California
on July 15, 2008 traveling Interstate 15 to Interstate 40 in California.
We will follow Interstate 40 through California, Arizona, New Mexico,
and northern most Texas. We will pick up Interstate 44 in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma traveling north. We plan to arrive in Branson, MO on July 18,
2008 to join in the events planned there.
Oklahoma Tour
Led by Verle
Randolph of Owasso, Oklahoma; (918) 272-1200; ) will depart Tulsa
Thursday July 17th to overnight in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The Oklahoma
Tour will join the Texas Tour in Hot Springs to travel to Branson, Missouri
and the events there as described previously in the Eastern Tour synopsis.
Michigan Tour
Led by Richard
DeMay of Farmington, MI 248-615-0148, departing Wednesday July 16th
from Farmington Hills, MI traveling through the Midwest. The Michigan
Tour will overnight in Indianapolis, Indiana Wednesday July 16th with
a visit to “Fast Times Indoor Karting” planned for evening entertainment.
Thursday July 17th the Michigan Tour will overnight in Sikeston, Missouri.
Bill and Jo Ann suggest the Lambert Café for a truly unique dining experience
– “home of the thrown roll”. “Got-a see it” to believe it. Day time stops
planned along the way include the Corvette Classic Museum in Ft. Wayne,
Indiana, and “My Garage Museum” at Mid America Motorworks in Effingham,
Illinois. Wednesday and Thursday overnight cities to be defined. The Michigan
Tour will join with the Eastern, Texas, California and Oklahoma Tours
for the events in Branson, MO Friday and Saturday traveling with those
Tours to Rolla for the “Last Night Out”.
Southeastern Tour
I’ve added a South Eastern Tour. But the Tour leader is TBA – i.e., “To
Be Arranged”. Bill needs a volunteer to lead a Road Tour section from
the Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida area. That Tour could
potentially pickup participants from other states on the route to Rolla.
Hopefully the South Eastern Tour will decide to join the other Tours stopping
in Branson, MO. Please contact Bill
Sangrey at 717-243-3955
“Last Night Out”
All Tour sections will gather in Rolla, Missouri Saturday, July 19th.
Tom and Alica Green (Key Sport Shop) will host a BarBQue at their home
in Rolla. As we did in 2007, convention preregistration check-in for all
Tour participants will occur at the “Last Night Out” in Rolla.
No long lines when we arrive in Saint Charles.
Sunday July 20th “Caravan”
All Tour sections will travel from Rolla on US 63 to Jefferson City and
to Saint Charles along the Missouri River on Missouri Route 94. The Tour
will parade from Old Town Saint Charles to the convention site.
And Return Home
As an added benefit for Roar Tour Members I’ll try something new
for 2008; I’ll coordinate the organization of return groups. I will
not plan the specific return routes leaving that to the individual groups.
However I intend to communicate the return plans among tour members from
the same geographic areas or expected to travel similar return routes.
I anticipate these groups will be relatively small with less formality,
but at least these groups will provide some “safety in numbers”
– particularly important to those Tour members driving the older
cars.
